Top 13 Tips for RVing With Pets

Nothing puts a damper on your exciting RV adventure like having to leave the pets at home. Your animals are part of the family, and leaving them behind can cause emotional distress – for you and your pet. So, many opt to take their pets along for the ride. RVing with pets can be an incredible experience – as long as you do it right. Here are our top tips for RVing with pets.

Pre-Trip Preparations

Before hitting the road, take these preparatory steps to ensure a smooth journey.

1. Veterinary Check-up:
Schedule a visit to the vet for a thorough check-up, and to get any needed vaccinations or medications to ensure your pets are healthy and fit to travel.

2. Microchipping and Identification:
Update your pets’ microchip information and attach visible identification tags to their collars. On the off chance they they wander off or get lost, you’ll thank yourself.

3. Familiarize Your Pet With Your Trailer:
In the weeks leading up to your trip, get your pet familiar with the inside of your RV. Start with small walkthroughs and treats, then maybe hang out with them in the trailer for more extended periods (i.e.: set up in your RV to watch a movie, rather than relaxing in your home’s livingroom). Finally, serve up your pet’s meals in the RV in the days before leaving, so that they feel as comfortable and provided-for as possible in that space. If your pet is particularly nervous, you can even do a test-night, staying in your RV overnight with your pet before actually leaving on your journey.

4. Pack All the Essentials:
Create a dedicated pet travel kit containing their food, medications, bowls, leash, waste disposal bags, grooming supplies, toys, and bedding. Familiar items from home will provide a sense of comfort and familiarity during the journey.

Safety Inside the RV

Maintaining a secure environment inside the RV is vital for your pets’ (and your) safety and sanity.

5. Crate Training:
If your pets are comfortable in crates, we advise using them while traveling in an RV. Secure the crates properly to prevent movement during the journey, reducing the risk of injury in case of sudden stops or turns.

6. Secure Doors and Windows:
Ensure all doors, windows, and vents are securely closed or have screens to prevent accidental escapes. Keep an eye on the RV’s entry points, especially when opening and closing doors.

7. Beware of Hot Temperatures:
RVs can heat up quickly, even with air conditioning. Never leave your pets unattended in a hot vehicle. Optimize temperature control inside the RV, ensuring your pets are comfortable at all times.

Pet-Friendly Campsites

When selecting campsites or RV parks, prioritize places that are pet-friendly. Consider the following factors:

8. Research Pet Policies:
Before making reservations, thoroughly research the campsite’s rules and regulations regarding pets. Check if they have designated pet areas, leash requirements, or any additional fees.

9. Exercise Opportunities:
Look for campsites with nearby walking trails, dog parks, or open spaces where your pets can stretch their legs and burn off their zoomies.

10. Respect Other Campers:
Be mindful of fellow campers by ensuring your pets don’t disturb others. Keep noise levels to a minimum and clean up after your pets promptly.

Health and Hygiene

Maintaining good hygiene and prioritizing your pets’ health is crucial during your RVing adventure!

11. Regular Exercise:
Keep your pets active by incorporating regular exercise into your daily routine. Take them for walks, play fetch, or engage in other activities to prevent boredom and promote their well-being.

12. Cleanliness and Waste Disposal:
Be responsible and clean up after your pets. Always carry waste disposal bags and promptly dispose of waste in designated areas. This helps maintain cleanliness and prevents the spread of diseases… the ‘leave-no-trace’ rule applies to your fur-babies, too!

13. Hydration and Nutrition:
Provide fresh water and maintain their regular feeding schedule. Ensure you have sufficient pet food supplies, taking into account any potential delays or changes to your travel plans.

With all these tips in mind, we hope you and your fur-babies have a memorable, relaxing, and fun RV camping experience! The pleasures of the open road are best shared with loved ones, and we know that pets certainly take up a big space in our hearts. Enjoy your time together!
