1.5M Pickups Recalled for Unexpected Downshifting
When you buy a Ford truck, we want you to be able to drive it with total confidence. That’s why when Ford discovers something wrong, they make sure to get it fixed ASAP.
It has been discovered that a glitch in the powertrain control software in some F-150 trucks may send a false reading to the speed sensor, causing them to unexpectedly downshift. The problem only affects F-150s from the 2011 through 2013 model years with a six-speed automatic transmission. The problem requires a software update to fix, which will require a visit to a Ford service centre.
It’s believed as many as 1.5 million trucks in North America may be affected by this issue. If you own one of the affected trucks, Ford will be in contact with you through a letter being sent out for March 4. If you don’t want to wait, you can also find out if your vehicle is among those recalled by entering your VIN here or filling out our contact sheet below.
This sudden downshift has resulted in five reported accidents, and Ford is working with dealers to get the problem addressed as quickly as possible.
