Ford is always tweaking and tinkering with its engines, looking to get a little extra out of them with every new generation. This includes the highly-efficient 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine, where Ford is constantly squeezing every iota of performance out of an already impressive bit of mechanical engineering.
How do you improve on a marvel of modern engine design? We here at Team Ford did some digging, and we’ve got the inside scoop on the insides of your engine.
Fuel System Improvements
One of the biggest concerns truck buyers have these days is with fuel efficiency. You want your truck to be spending most of its time doing some serious driving, not parked at a gas pump. Well, you can’t do much better than the 2.7L EcoBoost V6. Thanks to new improvements in the Port Fuel (PFI) and Direct Injection (DI) Fuel Systems, Ford has managed to improve the fuel efficiency of the V6 EcoBoost! Paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift capability, this version of the EcoBoost gives you an impressive 11.4L/100km combined city and highway driving in 4x4 mode. To give you an idea how impressive that is, the comparably performing GM 5.3L EcoTec V8 doesn’t even come close to that, with a measly 13.1L/100km combined.
New Materials
Ford has also reduced the size and weight of the 2.7L EcoBoost V6, thanks to advancements in compacted graphite iron (CGI) aluminum—the same material we’re making the Ford 6.7L Power Stroke turbo diesel engine out of. This innovation means the truck’s engine block is more compact, which brings down the overall weight of the vehicle, and allows the engine more breathing room. More air intake is better for internal combustion—which translates into more power, and better fuel economy. The lighter weight also means the truck has to work less to accelerate, which further helps with the fuel economy. Best of all, this overall lightening of your engine load hasn’t come at the expensive of power. You’re still enjoy the same kind of output you’d expect in most modern V8 engines, only in a V6! We’re talking 325 horses worth, plus another 400 lb-ft of torque, all good for 9,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity.
F-150 Lariat
Ford is so happy with this 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine, they’re want to put it in your F-150! Thanks to the standard 10-speed automatic transmission in the F-150 Lariat, you’ll be able to get the best possible performance and fuel economy combo out of our entire Ford pickup lineup. Plus, the Lariat is just a really great looking truck! Be sure to check out our model write-up for a better idea of just what it can do.
